Installation & Setup

Unpack and inspect all components for damage. Ensure a solid, level foundation.

  1. Foundation: Place on a reinforced concrete floor or heavy-duty stand.
  2. Leveling: Use precision level on bed ways; adjust leveling feet until bed is level within 0.002"/ft.
  3. Electrical: Connect to 220V single-phase power with proper grounding. Use a 30-amp circuit breaker.
  4. Lubrication: Fill headstock oil reservoir, apron oil reservoir, and gearbox with recommended oils before first use.
  5. Alignment: Check tailstock alignment with test bar; adjust if necessary.

WARNING! Lathe is extremely heavy; use proper lifting equipment and personnel. Ensure power is disconnected during installation.

Specifications

Controls and Components

Headstock controls: Spindle speed selector levers, Thread/feed direction lever, Spindle engagement lever.

Apron controls: Longitudinal/cross feed engagement, Feed direction lever, Half-nut lever for threading, Emergency stop button.

Quick-change gearbox: Selector levers for thread pitch and feed rate. Tailstock: Handwheel for quill advance, Locking lever, Offset adjustment screws. Compound rest: Graduated dials (0.001" per division), Swivel base.

Operating Instructions

Basic turning operation:

  1. Mount workpiece securely in chuck or between centers.
  2. Select appropriate cutting tool and install in tool post.
  3. Set spindle speed based on material and operation (refer to speed chart).
  4. Engage spindle and use carriage handwheel to position tool near workpiece.
  5. Use cross slide and compound for depth of cut.
  6. Engage power feed for consistent finishing cuts.
  7. For threading: Set gearbox to desired TPI, engage half-nut at correct position using thread dial indicator.

Tip: Always make a trial cut and measure before final machining. Never leave chuck key in chuck.

Tooling & Workholding

Compatible with standard lathe tooling:

  1. Chucks: 3-jaw self-centering (included), 4-jaw independent, collet chuck.
  2. Centers: Live center (MT #3) for tailstock, dead center for headstock.
  3. Tool posts: Quick-change tool post recommended for efficiency.
  4. Faceplates: For irregular shaped workpieces.
  5. Steady rest/follow rest: For long, slender workpieces.

WARNING! Ensure workpiece is securely clamped. Check clearance before starting spindle.

Maintenance Schedule

Daily: Clean chips, check oil levels in sight glasses, wipe down ways.

Weekly: Check belt tension, inspect for loose bolts/nuts, clean chuck jaws.

Monthly: Change headstock oil (first change after 50 hours, then every 500 hours), lubricate all grease fittings, check gearbox oil.

Annually: Inspect spindle bearings, check bed way alignment, inspect electrical connections.

Lubrication Points

Headstock: ISO 32 hydraulic oil (fill to sight glass). Apron: ISO 68 way oil (fill to sight glass). Gearbox: ISO 68 gear oil. Ways: Apply way oil daily before use. Bearings: Grease fittings on carriage and tailstock (use lithium-based grease).

CAUTION! Use recommended lubricants only. Over-greasing can damage seals.

Safety Guidelines

Essential safety practices:

  1. Always wear ANSI-approved safety glasses.
  2. Remove chuck keys and wrenches immediately after use.
  3. Secure long hair, loose clothing, and jewelry.
  4. Never attempt to measure workpiece while spindle is rotating.
  5. Use proper workpiece support (centers, steady rest) for long pieces.
  6. Disconnect power before changing belts or performing maintenance.
  7. Keep work area clean and well-lit.

DANGER! Rotating machinery can cause severe injury or death. Never operate when tired or impaired.
