Installation

Unpack and inspect all components. Place on a solid, level foundation.

  1. Foundation: Use a heavy-duty workbench or concrete floor with leveling feet.
  2. Electrical: Connect to appropriate 220V single-phase outlet with proper grounding.
  3. Leveling: Use precision level on bed ways; adjust leveling feet until bed is level in all directions.
  4. Lubrication: Fill oil reservoirs with recommended ISO 32 hydraulic oil before operation.

WARNING! Lathe weighs approximately 800 lbs; use proper lifting equipment and multiple persons. Ensure all bolts are tightened securely.

First-Time Setup

After installation, perform initial setup procedures.

  1. Clean all surfaces: Remove protective grease with mineral spirits.
  2. Lubrication: Fill headstock, apron, and gearbox with recommended oil.
  3. Alignment: Check tailstock alignment with test bar; adjust if necessary.
  4. Test run: Run spindle at lowest speed for 10 minutes to distribute oil.
  5. Backlash adjustment: Adjust cross slide and compound rest gibs for minimal play.

CAUTION! Always wear safety glasses. Keep hands away from moving parts during test runs.

Accessories & Attachments

Standard accessories included: 3-jaw chuck, 4-jaw chuck, Faceplate, Steady rest, Follow rest, Tool post, Centers (live and dead), Wrenches, Chip tray.

  1. Chuck installation: Mount on D1-4 spindle using camlock pins; tighten in star pattern.
  2. Tool post: Use quick-change tool post for efficient tool changes.
  3. Steady rest: Support long workpieces to prevent deflection.
  4. Follow rest: Support workpiece directly behind cutting tool.

Tip: Clean mating surfaces before installing accessories. Lubricate centers regularly.

Basic Operation

Standard turning procedures for the G4003 lathe.

  1. Workpiece setup: Secure in chuck or between centers; ensure proper alignment.
  2. Tool setup: Install cutting tool at center height; tighten securely.
  3. Speed selection: Choose RPM based on material and operation (refer to speed chart).
  4. Feed selection: Set quick-change gearbox for desired feed rate.
  5. Starting cut: Engage half-nut or automatic feed; make light initial cuts.
  6. Measurement: Stop lathe before measuring; use micrometers or calipers.
  7. Facing: Use cross slide for facing operations.
  8. Taper turning: Offset tailstock or use compound rest for tapers.

WARNING! Never leave chuck key in chuck. Remove all tools from bed before starting lathe. Stop lathe completely before changing speeds.

Threading Guide

Using the quick-change gearbox for threading operations.

  1. Select thread: Set gearbox levers according to threading chart.
  2. Engage half-nut: At precise moment using threading dial indicator.
  3. Depth of cut: Use compound rest set at 29° for incremental cuts.
  4. Disengage: Reverse spindle or disengage half-nut at end of cut.
  5. Metric threading: Install metric translation gears (included).

Note: Practice on scrap material first. Always disengage half-nut before reversing carriage.
